May Day for The Locker Project

On May 1st, 2017 a benefit for The Locker Project was held at The Thirsty Pig. The Locker Project connects food-insecure children in Maine with nourishing food to improve their learning capacity, health, and future. The fundraiser started at 5pm with giveaways, raffles, and the opportunity to donate canned food or cash in an effort to help The Locker Project restock their pantries. Beer was generously donated by our friends at Allagash Brewing and Shipyard Brewing Company. Members of The Locker Project designed the Hot Dog of the Month, from which part of the proceeds were donated to the organization.

In Maine, one in four children regularly experiences food insecurity. That's 60,000 Maine schoolchildren and substantially worse than the national average of one in six. Maine has the highest child hunger rate in New England. Child hunger exists in even the wealthiest Maine communities. There is enough food to share with every child in need of good nutrition. Schools are the most direct way for children to access nutritional food that might not be available at home. Learning capacity, school absenteeism, behavioral problems, and serious health issues month students can be addressed in large part simply by helping kids access nutritional food they might not have regular access to. With the USDA providing impoverished children with school breakfast and lunch programs, the times children go hungry the most are in the evenings, weekends, and long school breaks. Statistically, children are the most desperate for food during summer break. By partnering with the Good Shepherd Food Bank, the Locker Project is able to provide nutritional food for Maine children who are food-insecure, both during the day and for take-home, at the cost of $150 per child per year.

Girl Scout Cookie & Beer Pairing

On Sunday, March 12th (National Girl Scout Day) we hosted Portland's own Troop 1979 of The Girl Scouts of Maine. While the group of 7th Grade Girl Scouts and their troop leaders sold cookies at the front of the restaurant, we sold flights of beer that we hand selected to pair with this seasons cookies. We wanted to promote The Girl Scouts of America, an organization that empowers young girls by teaching life, entrepreneurship, social, and business skills to help them lead successful lives. The Girl Scouts, much like the role of women in society, is invaluable and we were happy to spotlight them at The Thirsty Pig. We also enjoyed providing the community a fun event to bring together two of our great loves - local craft beer and Girl Scout Cookies!

Pairings consisted of the following:

Peanut Butter Patties & Mast Landing Gunners Daughter 5.5%
Thin Mints & Ballast Point Peppermint Victory at Sea 10%
Shortbread & Bissell Brothers Substance 6.6%
Caramel deLites & Allagash Dougernaut 7.5%
Peanut Butter Sandwich & Bunker Trashmaster 9.5%
Thanks-A-Lot & Bantam Rojo 5.4%
S’mores & Brooklyn Framboisie 7.3%
Lemonades & Foundation Venture 8%

Thirsty Pig Lovers Weekend & VaLonePine's Day Party

We chose to host a weekend of events to celebrate love. Love of each other, love of food, love of music, love of beer. Encouraging our friends and neighbors to come alone or together to escape the snow and kick-off the Valentine's weekend in style. Friday 2/10 was the tapping of two new beers, the Bissell Brothers Viggy Kick-Flip Cream Ale and Orono Brewing Company Tubular IPA. Saturday 2/11 was Prime the Pump with live music from Pete Withal, Tim Bergeron and Kris Rodgers. Sunday 2/12 we hosted a Galentine's Brunch that featured Red Velvet Waffes, Biscuits & Sausage Gravy, Chorizo Breakfast Quesadillas, Corned Pork Hash, and Mimosa Jello Treats. Finally, Tuesday 2/14: The VaLonePine's Day Party, a chance to bring people together to celebrate our love of local beers and give love back to our community. Featuring four beers from Lone Pine Brewing and a Fundraiser Raffle to benefit The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine. Love truly was in the air this weekend! <3
